While adults spend more time listening than they do on any other communication skill, most people’s listening skills are woefully inadequate. Listening skills are taught infrequently, if at all, in school, and few people take the initiative to improve their listening skills through training.
One reason most people don’t do so is that they believe they already know what good listening looks like — but their conception of what constitutes good listening is very limited and wholly inadequate for most situations. Research has shown that the top 5% of listeners are much more active and engaged in conversations than most people would expect. They ask clarifying questions, they empathize with the speaker and make supportive statements, and they demonstrate a willingness to help, even when offering solutions.
To complete this module, look back at the exercise you completed at the end of Lesson 3. Imagine that, after completing this course, you improve your listening skills to the point where you can honestly say that you’re a “10” on each of the six levels of listening.
Now, complete the following Discussion Prompt.
